As a child I loved October. Everything changed. Clothing became heavier, leaves became colorful, the air became crisp, and the garden became all of these. After tending to her own garden Grand Ma Ma would drive over to Mothers to help her with the fall harvest.
I don't remember Mother ever helping Grand Ma Ma with her harvest. I guess because Grand Ma Ma had Grand Pa Pa and her sisters my Aunties to help her. Grand Ma Ma came haulin' up the hill in her 1960 Pontiac Bonneville and I ran outside to get what I wanted. Grand Ma Ma kisses.
They were the best. I jumped into Grand Ma Ma's arms and she'd swing me round and around while kissing my neck over and over. Nothin' better except for maybe puppy breath. Lollipop had just had a litter of pups so I grabbed Grand Ma Ma's hand and we ran to the barn. Lollipop was mine and I had promised Grand Ma Ma first pick of the pups. Grand Ma Ma had 5 choices. She gently picked up each pup one by one and gave them
Grand Ma Ma kisses and put her nose up to each pups mouth. "Your Great Grand Pa Pa always said to pick the pup with the sweetest breath" -- "the sweeter the breath the longer before death". I looked up into Grand Ma Ma eyes and said right out loud "aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh HORSESHIT" Grand Ma Ma and I began laughing so hard that Mother came running out to the barn to find out why. Of course Grand Ma Ma didn't tell Mother the real reason for the laughter. Grand Ma Ma just put her nose back up to the pups mouth took a nice long smell and said "Thommy boy this is the one".
I smiled at Grand Ma Ma because we both knew what she was gonna name him. And she did. I loved my Grand Ma Ma and from that day on I called her Granny. Mother still insisted I call her Grand Ma Ma but I figured if Grand Ma Ma could call her puppy Horseshit than I could call my Grand Ma Ma Granny. At least when Mother wasn't around. Everything changes in October. The clothing, the leaves, the air, the garden and sometimes if you're really lucky a name. Granny kisses-nothin' better except for maybe puppy breath.
