Not only one of Waters's best movies, but this movie crossed over and expanded Water's appeal without compromising his style and vision. Ricki Lake as the "plump" young heroine is especially fabulous as is the always fabulous DIVINE!

Hairspray was rated PG, Waters’ first film not to get an X rating. Waters' body of work always explored social, gender and sexual boundaries via fabulous films such as Hag In a Black Leather Jacket, Mondo Trasho, Multiple Maniacs, and Female Trouble. Most of which featured his friend who was originally from Baltimore Harris Milstead --AKA--DIVINE!
