On the phone!
As a child I knew that when the phone rang it was always a special occasion for Mother! No answering machines to take messages-that wasn't the purpose of the phone. Mother had plenty of time to pour her coffee and grab her cigarettes and only then would the ringing stop and the love begin! Mother's calls were when she escaped--inside another world--a world where only sound existed! I knew never to disturb Mother during her chats. I would steal a glance at her and could tell just by looking into her eyes that she was lost! Lost in another world-a world that I was only half in! I wanted so much to be in that world with her. As always she would suddenly notice me watching her-give me one of her smiles that said without words-I love you now Leave! And I would! I don't believe that the world of today realizes just how special the phone was during Mother's life. Yes-these days we spend more time on the phone, the phone goes with us everywhere & we always have to be reminded to turn our phones off!
The phones of today may be special but I don't believe that the calls are!
Mother-I adored her!
